A playgroup in Angus has been closed after children were diagnosed with E coli.

Health officials said the infection affected a "small number" of youngsters, who were being monitored and given medical treatment.

As a precautionary measure, the playgroup has voluntarily closed while an investigation into the outbreak takes place.

NHS Tayside's health protection team has also issued information to parents at the playgroup and an Angus primary school advising them of what action to take if they have concerns about their child's health.

It is understood the investigation is centred on the Peter Pan playgroup and Carlogie primary school in Carnoustie.

Public health consultant Dr Jackie Hyland said: "NHS Tayside and Angus Council are together investigating a small number of linked cases of E coli O157 infection.

"The risk to the general public remains low and those affected have received appropriate medical treatment and advice."

Further information can be obtained by calling the helpline number on 0800 028 2816 between 8am and 10pm.

The Angus outbreak comes a week after a three-year-old girl from Dunbartonshire died as a result of contracting the infection.

Following the girl's death, Food Standards Scotland ordered the withdrawal from sale of a batch of ewe's milk cheese produced in South Lanarkshire.
