A Mercedes ploughed into a stationary caravan before the driver and passengers fled the scene.

Police officers are searching for the occupants of the car after the crash on Groathill Road North in Edinburgh just after 8am on Wednesday.

The police helicopter has been deployed to support the search.

A police spokeswoman said: "Police responded to a report of a car driving erratically on Groathill Road North around 8.10am on Wednesday.

"The vehicle was subsequently involved in a collision with a stationary caravan on Groathill Road North.

"Inquiries are ongoing to trace the individuals believed to have been inside the vehicle.

"The search activity is being supported by colleagues in the air support unit."
