Couple spend wedding night in cells after foul-mouthed tirades
Graeme and Margaret Leslie threatened off-licence staff and police officers in Montrose.
A couple spent their wedding night in the cells after threatening people in the street just three hours after tying the knot.
Graeme Leslie and his wife Margaret made threats to staff at an off-licence, shoppers and police in Montrose High Street, Angus.
The wedding had only been allowed to go ahead after bail conditions banning the pair from seeing each other were lifted just a week before the ceremony.
They were married on Friday in Montrose before hosting a small reception for friends at a local pub.
The evening descended into chaos with Mrs Leslie later screaming "you've ruined my wedding day - I'll kill you" at a woman in the street.
Mr Leslie, a former Royal Artillery solider who served in Falklands and Northern Ireland, then threatened to attack the police who arrested him.
Forfar Sheriff Court heard they decided to head home to nearby St Cyrus in Aberdeenshire, stopping on the way to pick up drinks from the Party Time off-licence in Montrose High Street.
Fiscal depute Jill Drummond said a row began after Mr Leslie selected two bottles of cider from the shop, prompting another customer to state: "That'll give you some hangover."
Ms Drummond said: "He pointed at the man and shouted 'f**k off'.
"He was then told he wasn't going to be served and at that point knocked over £25 worth of alcohol, smashing it on the floor behind the till.
"Other witnesses told him to calm down and leave and he went out to the taxi where Mrs Leslie was. He was then prevented from re-entering the shop."
Ms Drummond said Mrs Leslie then went into the shop, claimed Mr Leslie did not knock over the drinks and accused a shop worker of ruining her wedding day and threatened to kill her.
Police attended and held the pair separately in Montrose High Street, where both went on tirades in front of families before they were arrested and taken to Arbroath police station.
They spent their first night as a married couple in separate cells.
Ms Drummond said once at the police station Mr Leslie directed several threats at officers and said: "I was in Perth [prison] when Perth was Perth, not Butlins like it is now."
Graeme Leslie, 61, and Margaret Leslie, 56, both from St Cyrus, pleaded guilty on summary complaint to a charge of behaving in a threatening and abusive manner on Montrose High Street on Friday, September 9.
Nick Markowski, defending Mr Leslie, said: "They were married at 12.30pm and this happened shortly after. The question now is if he spends his honeymoon at home in St Cyrus or in prison.
"He is still wearing his wedding attire today. He has spent his first three days married in cells of one variety or another."
Nick Whelan, for Mrs Leslie, said: "She didn't envisage spending her wedding night in a police station but that's exactly what happened."
Sheriff Gregor Murray deferred sentence until next month for social work background reports, remanded Graeme Leslie in custody and released Margaret Leslie on bail.
He said: "Your role was lesser, Mrs Leslie, but one of your comments puts you in danger of a custodial sentence."
Speaking outside court, Mrs Leslie said: "I should have stayed in the taxi but you've got to protect your own.
"I shouldn't have done it. It wasn't a big wedding - just half a dozen friends. It is my second marriage and his third."
