Plans to convert a former market building into a trampoline park and leisure complex have been approved.

The former Dens Road Market in Dundee has been the subject of proposals by local businessman Chris Airlie since it closed down in 2013.

Under the plans, a ten pin bowling alley and trampoline park will be created at the site, which originally housed a jute mill when it was first developed around 1897.

The structure will also contain climbing frames, crazy golf and bumper cars after Dundee City Council granted permission to the planning application drawn up by architects ARKTX.

In a document lodged with the council by the firm, it stated the plans would aim to serve "inner-city children" as other leisure developments in Dundee are "heavily dependent on private car use for access".

It stated: "This proposal is seen as an opportunity to form a facility ingrained within the local community with long-term sustainable benefit to both the applicant and the building users."

The backers highlighted there is "no similar facility located within the city" while it would "provide much-needed economic and employment benefit to the immediate surroundings".

The council granted permission for the planning in principle application, subject to several conditions including agreeing opening hours for the park and lodging a detailed breakdown of how the site will look.
