A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of an eight-month-old baby in Rochdale, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said.

The 25-year-old is also suspected of causing or allowing the death of a child, and is being questioned in custody.

A 25-year-old woman has also been arrested on suspicion of causing or allowing the death of a child, and remains in custody.

Police were called by the ambulance service following concerns about the welfare of a child on Tuesday.

The baby boy was taken to hospital with multiple injuries and died on Thursday.

Detective Chief Inspector Jamie Daniels from GMP's Major Incident Team, said: "This is a deeply distressing investigation involving a small child. Our thoughts at this time are with the family, friends and all others within the local community who may be affected by this incident.
