A war memorial next to the Battle of Bannockburn Visitor Centre has been daubed with graffiti.

The message "everyone's different" was painted in green and red on one of the walls of the Rotunda at Whins of Milton, Stirling.

Police are appealing for information to help catch the vandal who struck sometime between 6pm on Sunday, and 10am on Monday.

The heritage centre's property manager, Scott McMaster, said a war memorial was a completely inappropriate place to "express yourself".

He said: "Someone has spray-painted the message on the back one of the Rotunda walls.

"We are really disappointed. This is the first time it has been vandalised in at least a decade."

He added: "We don't want to encourage people to put political messages or slogans on a war memorial. People have to treat these sites with respect. It is just not appropriate.

"We won't tolerate this sort of thing and we are working with the police."

The visitor centre is covered by CCTV and the graffiti is being removed ahead of its doors open day at the weekend.

Mr McMaster said staff are keen to put the incident behind them are confident the community will help provide information to catch the culprit.

He said: "We are looking forward to the weekend's events where we are going to have living historians and for the first time letting people try archery.

"The event will help us raise money for the upkeep of the memorial and centre."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Enquiries are ongoing and we are keen to hear from anyone who can provide information regarding this incident."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 or anonymously through Crimestoppers can on 0800 555 111.
