Celtic fan sang sectarian songs while dressed as an elf
Schoolboy Craig Boyd was told by a sheriff that he was a 'daft wee laddie'.
A Celtic supporter who sang sectarian songs while he was dressed as an elf has been described by a sheriff as "a daft laddie".
Craig Boyd, a schoolboy and trainee merchant seaman, was part of a group of supporters known as the Style Mile Vandals who were filmed by police at McDiarmid Park in Perth.
The group left the stadium during the first half of a Friday night match between St Johnstone and Celtic in May 2015 and stood singing songs on a grassy knoll outside the stadium.
Police filmed the group of around 25 fans and Boyd, from Greenock, Inverclyde, could clearly be seen singing "We will never be mastered by no Orange b******s."
A trial at Perth Sheriff Court heard the 18-year-old was easy for the police to pick out because of his distinctive festive fancy dress.
Police constable Steven Kelly told a trial earlier this year: "He was wearing a green and white Santa or elf-type hat."
After finding the sixth year pupil guilty, sheriff William Wood noted he already had three Highers and was studying for two more.
The sheriff banned Boyd from watching Celtic until after he had finished studying for his exams and was told the accused had stayed out of trouble since the trial in February.
Sheriff Wood said: "This is at the lower end of the scale but you have to appreciate your actions have consequences.
"Even at 15 or 16 years of age you must know the singing of sectarian songs is not something society will tolerate in Scotland.
"It's not the most serious offence of its type but you have got to appreciate there has been wrongdoing."
Boyd was found guilty of behaviour likely to incite public disorder by shouting sectarian remarks while he was at McDiarmid Park in Perth in May 2015.
Sheriff Wood admonished Boyd and told him: "Taking into account the age you were at the time I am prepared to take the view you were just a daft laddie."
