One person has been injured after a pedestrian bridge collapsed on a major motorway, bringing traffic to a halt on one of the busiest travel days of the year.

The M20 in Kent was closed in both directions, between junctions three and four, after the bridge collapsed on Saturday afternoon.

South East Coast Ambulance Service confirmed a motorcyclist, aged in his 50s, had been taken to hospital with suspected broken ribs.

The man has not been identified and his condition is not thought to be life-threatening.

Highways England said the collapse, on the eastbound carriageway, was caused by a "vehicle striking the bridge".

"All emergency services are en-route or in attendance.

"Road users are being strongly urged to plan ahead and use alternative routes. The road is expected to be closed for an extended duration", they added.

The collapse has come on the busiest day of the Bank Holiday getaway, with the AA estimating 10 million drivers will take to the road on Saturday. Kent Fire and Rescue Service and South East Coast Ambulance Service are currently on the scene, and were "dealing with one patient."

Eyewitness Andy Sunnucks, 24, a passenger travelling from Maidstone to Sevenoaks, said: "We were driving on the road and came to a standstill. People were getting out of their cars and running towards the bridge.

"I could see half the bridge was missing. We went to have a look and the back end of the lorry was in pieces, " he added.
