A man who fired a 29,000-volt Taser at a police officer outside a pub in Fife has been jailed for more than five years.

John Wishart was trying to avoid arrest when he fired the weapon towards one a police officer as another hid behind a car for safety.

Officers used CS spray to try to stop Wishart, who at one point jumped into the driver's seat of the police vehicle.

The 39-year-old was eventually arrested after the incident in Leven, Fife, in May this year.

Police had questioned Wishart after responding to a report of drink-driving.

CCTV showed the father-of-one discharging the device in the street as members of the public watched on.

After finally being arrested, police also found him to be carrying two knives.

Wishart pleaded guilty to four charges including assault and possessing a Taser.

At the High Court in Glasgow on Friday, Lord Boyd jailed him for five years and three months. He will first have to serve six months from a previous jail term.

He told Wishart: "Police officers who serve the community are entitled to the protection of the courts.

"You tried to threaten or intimidate them in a bid to prevent them carrying out their duty.

"I accept you did not intend to do any harm with the Taser - you were intent on using it to escape from the police."
