Mental health nurse accused of raping three women prisoners
Peter Barrowman allegedly carried out the attacks at HMP Corton Vale.
A mental health nurse has gone on trial accused of raping three women while working inside a Scottish prison.
Peter Barrowman, 35, of Stenhousemuir, Falkirk, is alleged to have targeted three prisoners at HMP Cornton Vale and supplied them with drugs.
On Monday, a woman told a court how she was raped by the mental health nurse while serving time in the jail.
The 26-year-old claimed Barrowman attacked her in a doctor's room moments after telling her about his family.
The witness said: "I tried to scream, it was just like nothing came out".
The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was giving evidence at the High Court in Glasgow on Monday.
She said she met Barrowman in January 2014 after her mother died and he arranged for her to have diazepam on the lead up to the funeral.
She claimed on the day of the funeral, after returning to the prison, Barrowman gave her two valium tablets and said "take these, these will help you".
Advocate depute Rosemary Guinnane, prosecuting, asked if he said anything else to her.
The woman replied: "He said to be quiet about it and don't tell anyone."
In evidence she claimed that on another occasion when she was called to see Barrowman to discuss her care assessment plan he had touched her on the leg, but she moved.
The court heard Barrowman gave her two Pregabalin tablets while she was in the room with him and told her: "I'm not doing this for nothing."
The witness claimed this happened a couple of times - that he made comments to her and she was puzzled by them.
She said she thought it meant he wanted something in return and said he was "flirting".
The jury heard she was called to the health centre one day by Barrowman in a doctor's room.
She claimed he asked how she was and had a "normal" conversation and spoke about his wife and two children.
The 26-year-old told the court Barrowman then grabbed hold of her, told her to shut up when she asked what he was doing and attacked her.
Asked if he said anything else she said: "Just that I had to pay him back in some way for the tablets I had been given, I said 'you didn't say anything like that right at the very start'."
She added: "On the medication he put us on, I didn't know what day it was or what time it was, I wasn't myself."
The court was told she tried to scream but nothing came out as he sexually attacked her. She said it ended when she moved away and ran out of the room.
The jury was told the woman - who was days away from release at the time - reported the incident to a member of staff a couple of days later and the police were contacted.
Ms Guinnane asked: "Why did you not tell somebody right away that you had been raped by Peter Barrowman?"
The witness said she was "scared" and "just wanted to get out of there".
Barrowman is accused of supplying three women with drugs and raping them. He is also charged with attempting to rape one of the women and sexually assaulting a fourth woman.
He also faces drugs charges and accusations of behaving in a threatening or abusive manner towards one of his alleged victims.
All the alleged offences are said to have taken place at Cornton Vale Prison between February and March 2014.
Barrowman denies the charges and the trial before judge Sean Murphy QC continues.
