A US pastor who believes natural disasters are a "sign of God's wrath" to punish gay people has been flooded out of his home.

Tony Perkins made headlines last year after saying Hurricane Joaquin was caused by abortion and the legalisation of gay marriage.

The hurricane caused extensive damage on the east coast of America in 2015.

However on Thursday, Perkins revealed he had been forced to flee his home following the recent storm in Louisiana.

The controversial Pastor is president of the anti-gay Christian group Family Research Council.

Speaking to them on Wednesday, he said: "This is a flood of near-biblical proportions.

"We had to escape from our home Saturday by canoe. We had about 10 feet of water at the end of our driveway. Our house flooded, a few of our cars flooded", he added.

In 2015, during an interview with Messianic Jewish pastor Jonathan Cahn, he agreed that Hurricane Joaquin was a "sign of God's wrath", and said: "God is trying to send us a message".

His comments sparked international condemnation.
