Man jailed after using library Wi-Fi to download abuse images
William Cox was caught with a huge cache of pictures and videos after a raid on his flat.
A man who downloaded more than 10,000 child abuse images and videos by using a library's Wi-Fi network has been jailed.
William Cox was caught with the huge cache of pictures, which included more than 2000 at the most serious level.
Cox, 59, of Craigowan Road, Dundee, pleaded guilty to downloading and possessing indecent images of children between April and June last year. His flat was raided last June after police were tipped off.
Dundee Sheriff Court heard Cox said he did not have his own internet connection but instead used the nearby Charleston Library's signal to access the internet.
Sheriff Lorna Drummond QC told Cox jail was the only option and sentenced him to a year behind bars. She also placed him on the sex offenders register for life.
Fiscal depute Eilidh Robertson said the images found depicted both boys and girls aged between a few months and 15.
She said: "In total, 9226 indecent images and 1471 indecent videos of children were recovered across all devices. The total run time of the videos was about 102 hours.
Mike Short, defending, said: "Given the nature of the charges there's clearly an ongoing problem for him. He says he downloaded these images but didn't view them. He says he simply did it to get caught.
Sheriff Drummond also imposed a two-year extended sentence meaning he will be on licence for 24 months after his release.
She said: "I am satisfied there is no alternative to a custodial sentence."
