A British Olympic team member was reportedly held up at gun point in Brazil - leading to athletes being advised not to leave the Olympic Village.

The unidentified individual was accosted while enjoying a night out in Rio but escaped injury, according to The Guardian.

Team GB members are now said to have been warned it is "not worth the risk" to leave the athletes village over fears they could be targeted when wearing the British kit.

The incident is said to have happened on Tuesday morning, leaving the individual IN question unharmed but in shock.

On Wednesday, British athletics officials warned athletes in an email that they if they left the village they did so at their own risk, The Guardian reported.

In a letter seen by the newspaper, officials spoke about a "significant security incident overnight".

The letter warns against leaving the village after dark in anything other than British Olympic Association/Local Organising Committee/UK Athletics transport - precluding taxis.

"Do not go out of the village wearing TeamGB kit or carry anything of value unless absolutely unavoidable - this makes you too big a target for theft/crime," the letter adds.

"You MUST inform a member of team management if you are leaving the village and planning on staying out overnight - please do this BEFORE you leave".

The letter also says: "Rio is NOT a safe environment, and the level of crime has spiked in the last few days".

"Think very carefully about whether it is worth the risk of leaving the village to celebrate after you have finished competing - BOA/UKA staff cannot guarantee your safety when away from the village/British School/British House.

"Our strong advice is that it is simply not worth the risk given the current climate in Rio".
