Two British hikers who were lost for five days in the Pyrenees have been rescued, Spanish officials have said.

Firefighters found the pair from Cambridge hungry and thirsty near the town of Valcarlos, which borders Spain and France.

The walkers told their rescuers that they left the French town of Saint Jean de Pied de Port on Friday intending to walk 30km (20m) to the Spanish town of Roncesvalles.

But they got lost along the way and soon ran out of food and water.

They said they drank from irrigation canals and animal troughs to survive.

The pair have not been named.
