A nurse has been suspended for failing to protect the dignity of a patient while carrying out a sensitive procedure.

Yvonne Martin did not close the curtains around his bed while preparing to remove a catheter at Ninewells Hospital.

A complaint was made by the male patient's relative, who said they saw the procedure carried out "in plain sight" on July 22, 2013.

Another patient complained she was left in pain and distress when Ms Martin struggled to insert a female catheter in May 2014.

The patient said the procedure had not been explained to her before Ms Martin attempted to insert the catheter more than once, causing the patient pain.

The procedure was eventually taken over by the charge nurse.

A hearing before the Nursing and Midwifery Council heard the nurse who took over from Ms Martin described the scene as "chaos".

The patient claimed she thought Ms Martin was a cleaner.

The NMC concluded Ms Martin had demonstrated a lack of competence in both incidents, as well as charges she failed to keep proper records of observations done on patients.

It ruled her fitness to practise was impaired and said: "Patients would still be placed at a risk of harm if Mrs Martin were allowed to practise, even whilst subject to conditional registration."

Ms Martin was suspended from practising nursing for a year, with an interim suspension order for 18 months.
