Olympic diving training will resume in a pool which unexpectedly turned a startling shade of green, after it returns to its normal colour.

Competitors and spectators were left baffled when the pool at the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre in Rio turned bright green, contrasting sharply with its still-blue neighbour.

The sudden shift overshadowed the women's 10-metre platform final, becoming a central point of conversation online and in the media.

There were a number of jokes circulating suggesting explanations for the colour change - such as someone having an 'accident' in the water.

British diver Tonia Couch even revealed that the green was so intense she had been unable to see her partner Lois Toulson underwater, The Times reported.

The pool was closed this morning, prompting a tweet from medallist Tom Daley - who won bronze for Team GB in the men's synchronized 10-metre platform on Monday alongside Dan Goodfellow - joking that he hoped they had not been swimming in anything "too bad".

But Olympic organisers said water testing has been carried out and there was no risk to divers as there was "no problem" with water quality - simply the colour.

Diving training will resume on Friday afternoon, they added.
