This is the moment that a 'confused' elderly pensioner drove the wrong way down a major motorway at night time.

Keith Taylor, 79, made a u-turn in the southbound lane of the M23 and then proceeded to drive into oncoming traffic for six miles.

Video shows approaching vehicles desperately weaving to avoid his car - which nevertheless "continued doggedly in the wrong direction" until police finally caught up with it near Crawley, West Sussex.

Police said Taylor, of King's Lynn, Norfolk had become confused after returning on a flight to the UK.

PC Mark Botevyle said it was pure luck that nobody had been killed.

Taylor later pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and was sentenced on July 25 by Norfolk magistrates to six months' imprisonment, suspended for two years.

He was also disqualified from driving for two years and told he must take an extended driving test before reapplying for his licence.
