Australian police have conducted a series of counter-terrorism raids around the state of Victoria and arrested a 31-year-old man.

The man, who hasn't been identified, was arrested in the Melbourne suburb of Braybrook on Saturday and belongs to "a number" of different organisations, police said.

His arrest was the culmination of months of work, which began when police received a tip off earlier this year.

Warrants were carried out in the town of Bacchus Marsh, north west of the city, as well as Tatura in the centre of the state.

They said there was no ongoing threat to the community.
