For most of the year, Edinburgh is the place to enjoy Michelin-starred meals, relax in laid-back pizza joints or enjoy a juicy burger without too much forward-thinking.

While the buzz of the city during the Fringe can be infectious, it can also be infuriating when all you fancy is a slice of pizza and a beer, only to find your favourite restaurant is queued out the door for the next two hours.

You could just order a takeaway to your Airbnb or (sneakily) to your hotel but there are other ways to immerse yourself in Fringe fun without being forced to line up in the rain for some food.

Check out our top picks of places to enjoy some some quirky street eats that will help you beat the queues without resorting to a supermarket sandwich meal deal between shows.

Oink

Surprisingly filling, this hog roast joint just off the Royal Mile is fairly popular but even if there is a queue out the door it is likely to move pretty quickly considering the menu is incredibly simple.

Choose a bread roll, pile it high with pulled pork from the hog in the window then add your choice of sauce, stuffing and a sneaky piece of crackling if they have any left.

They've recently opened a second outlet with more seating at the Grassmarket, where you can double your fix for as little as £2.95.

For those who don't fancy searching for a bench to enjoy their foil-wrapped roll, Oink never take bookings for their seating so if you're quick you could grab a seat out of the elements.

Harajuku Kitchen

This popular Japanese spot has been offering foodie fans a taste of traditional dishes for the past seven years from its restaurant on Gillespie Place.

Handily situated near the King's Theatre, it's the perfect stop if you are planning to see The Glass Menagerie or The Toad Knew during the festival.

If you don't fancy travelling too far, Harajuku Kitchen will also be popping up in George Street for the entirety of the festival to satisfy your gyoza or udon cravings.

What's more, if your prefer to dine in, just show your Fringe tickets to get a tasty 10% off your bill.

Grams Edinburgh

Festival season isn't all cider and soggy chips, especially if you have a restrictive diet or just fancy sticking to your healthy eating regime.

Picture-perfect naked cakes, made with fresh fruits, nuts and cacao, have proved popular, with Instagram. users and diners alike.

Grams also serves a wide range of salads and sandwiches for vegans, vegetarians, those on a gluten free diet and carnivores, too.

Try a takeaway box of a baked sweet potato and salad with a heavenly snickers cake for afters and head up to Shandwick Place to enjoy a healthy but satisfying early dinner before your show.

Boxsmall Market

It may sit on top a shopping centre but there is more than meets the eye at this family-friendly festival highlight which runs throughout August.

While the big draws may be the family putting green above Princes Mall, the craft shops housed in creative boxes or even the outdoor afternoon teas, the food stalls are ideal for a quick bite when you are rushing between shows.

Pizza Geeks will be offering wood-fired pizzas while Shrimpwreck offers urban seafood from fish finger sandwiches to fish tacos from their truck.

And of course, what's a festival without a tub of Frisky Froyo for dessert?

Meltmongers

Sometimes, carbs with extra carbs with a side of carbs is all you want when you've spent a day traipsing the length of Edinburgh to catch every show on your list.

While a cheese toastie may upon first glance seem like a strange choice for refuelling, two slabs of thick bread filled with cheesy macaroni with a side of sweet potato fries will soon change your mind.

Situated on Bruntsfield Place, grab a few boxes of carby goodness and enjoy them on the grass at the park nearby.

And if you're planning to hit the Fringe early, make sure you stop by for a breakfast burrito and a coffee - Instagram is a big fan.

Of course, if you're after something a bit fancier during the Fringe, why not check out these food and drink pop-up bars and restaurants that will make dining out during the festival that little bit more refined?
