The owners of a Perthshire fruit farm have been "saddened" by the death of a worker in a fatal caravan fire.

Police are investigating the blaze, which broke out at Mains of Errol Farm in the early hours of Sunday.

A caravan was found ablaze in a camp at the site, which is home to migrant workers employed to pick strawberries that are sold through major retail chains.

A spokesman for Mains of Errol Farm said: "We are saddened to confirm that a tragic incident took place on the farm in the early hours of Sunday morning that resulted in the loss of life.

"No formal identification has taken place and we are currently assisting police and the fire service with their investigation.

"We are in communication with the other workers on the farm and will do all we can to support our employees at this sad time."

Dozens of caravans are lined up permanently in rows on the farm, which sits between the villages of St Madoes and Errol on the banks of the river Tay.

A spokesman for Police Scotland's Tayside Division said: "Police Scotland is currently investigating a fatal fire which occurred at Mains of Errol farm near Errol, Perthshire in the early hours of Sunday, July 31.

"A joint investigation with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service is being conducted and enquiries are at an early stage."
