BHS workers face redundancy as stores close for final time
The Stirling and Clydebank branches will cease trading on Saturday, with more to follow.
Scottish staff are facing redundancy after it was revealed the BHS stores in Stirling and Clydebank will close their doors this weekend.
They are among 20 branches throughout UK which will cease trading this Saturday, with a stock shortage meaning that remaining open was no longer viable.
More BHS stores in Scotland will be among the 32 units closing next weekend, including Ayr, Edinburgh (Leith and Cameron Toll), Falkirk, Hamilton, Livingston, Kilmarnock and Kirkcaldy.
The decision to sell BHS for £1 last year set off a chain of events which will potentially result in 580 staff across the UK losing their jobs.
Former owners Sir Philip Green and Dominic Chappell have been roundly criticised for their role in the demise of the department store, with MPs preparing a report on the matter.
Meanwhile, last minute bids to save the company through takeover bids from HMV and Sports Direct have so far failed.
Shopworkers' trade union Usdaw expressed its concern at the latest developments, with the prospect of finding a viable buyer growing increasingly slender.
Dave Gill, Usdaw national officer said: "This is terrible news for the staff in the 32 stores affected, on top of the 20 stores that are closing this Saturday.
"Our hope is that other retailers, including Sir Phillip Green's Arcadia group, will offer employment to these experienced, dedicated and loyal staff who suddenly find themselves unemployed.
"At the same time we are aware that the administrators are continuing to seek a buyer, who will hopefully be able to secure the future of the staff in the remaining stores.
"We remain concerned that there is still no news from Sir Phillip since he promised to 'sort' the pension scheme and we wait to hear details of what he proposes.
"In the meantime we are providing the support, advice and representation our members require at this difficult time."
