A woman is believed to be trapped in a car that plunged into the River Clyde next to Braehead shopping centre in Renfrew.

STV News understands a woman was seen driving the car erratically before it collided with a number of parked vehicles and then careered off the lip of the embankment into the river.

Divers have been deployed at the scene, which is close to Intu Braehead shopping centre.

A coastguard spokesman said: "We received reports of a vehicle in the water with a person trapped.

"We have two rescue teams at the scene - Helensburgh and Greenock as well as as a coastguard senior officer and the HM coastguard helicopter from Glasgow as well as police, ambulance and fire.

"The helicopter was on scene and did a quick search and went and picked up divers. There's now divers at the scene trying to rescue the person that's trapped."

Police have now cordoned off the entire Clyde View Park by the scene, with the public asked to vacate the area where emergency service teams are working.

A witness, who did not wish to be named, described the scene: "Our flat is just by the river where it all happened. At first I heard a lot of commotion and went to check what was happening.

"There were two ambulances, a couple of fire engines and maybe six or seven police cars. It looks like the coastguard are in the river as well.

"All the cars parked nearby were smashed, it looks as if a car or something has crashed into them then gone into the river.

"Apparently there's a young girl being treated in one of the ambulances but I think the fire crews and coastguard are still trying to locate the car in the water.

"I'm not sure but I think there could be someone still in the car."

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "An operation is currently under way after emergency services received a report of a vehicle entering the River Clyde near Whimbrel Wynd at around 1.20pm on Thursday."
