A wartime bomb spotted by a dog walker on a Montrose beach has been blown up.

The device, measuring around 1.5ft in length, was stuck fast to a rock on the beach at Mains of Kinnaber.

The area was cordoned off by the Montrose Coastguard Rescue Team at around 11am on Tuesday.

Due to the tide coming in, the Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal team were unable to access it again until just after 5pm when it was confirmed the device was likely a Second World War bomb.

The device was detonated in a controlled explosion on the beach at 6.20pm.

A spokesperson for the HM Coastguard Angus and Mearns said anyone who discovers a suspicious device should contact 999.
