Scotland is set to sizzle as a mini-heatwave continues to hit the UK - with forecasters predicting Tuesday could be the hottest day of the year.

Temperatures are expected to rise to 29C in parts of the country, with Glasgow due to enjoy 26C while Edinburgh and Aberdeen are set for highs of 25C.

The highest temperature for this year so far is 27.7C recorded at Plockton on May 9, just 3C off the all time record for Scotland which was set back in August 2003 at Greycrook in the Borders.

STV weather presenter Sean Batty is advising sun lovers to enjoy the weather while they can though, as the sunshine may be short-lived.

The hot and humid weather is expected to lead to thunderstorms, downpours and even hailstones by the end of the day.

He said: "Highs will reach 27C to 28C in central, southern and eastern parts of the country, but I wouldn't be surprised to see somewhere hit 30C later today.

"The high temperatures and humidity will lead to thunderstorms developing over Northern Ireland this evening and these will move north east across Scotland tonight."

Some of the thunderstorms are likely to merge together to form larger storm systems and could lead to frequent lightning and torrential downpours that could lead to some flooding issues and large hailstones.

Sean added: "The weather tomorrow is looking very lively with further thunderstorms moving in from the south. At the moment it looks as if the worst will be across the north and east of the country, and again flooding and large hail is possible.

"So the story is, get out there and enjoy the fine weather today, because it's all change tomorrow."
