Hundreds of complaints over column criticising Muslim presenter
A press regulator has received more than 300 complaints about Kelvin MacKenzie's attack.
The Independent Press Standards Organisation (Ipso) has received hundreds of complaints about a Kelvin MacKenzie column about a Channel 4 News journalist wearing a hijab during a report on the Nice massacre.
The editorial in The Sun by MacKenzie, a former editor of the newspaper, sparked outrage for questioning whether it was right for Muslim journalist Fatima Manji to present the news broadcast.
Stating that he could "hardly believe my eyes" Mr MacKenzie asked in his Monday column: "Was it appropriate for her to be on camera when there had been yet another shocking slaughter by a Muslim?"
Ipso said the complaints, which still have to be assessed, related to accuracy, harassment and discrimination.
A spokesman for The Sun said it was making "no comment" on the issue.
