Rail passengers will face more disruption as staff plan another two days of strike action.

Members of the RMT union participated in 48 hours of industrial action across Scotland over the weekend.

RMT has now revealed plans for further strikes on Sunday, July 24, and Sunday, July 31, over claims ScotRail wants to introduce driver-only trains.

The Abellio-operated company denies this and says it has no plans to scrap train guards.

RMT general secretary Mick Cash said: "Despite this series of rock-solid strikes it is extraordinary that Abellio/Scotrail continues to ignore the strength of feeling amongst their staff over the extension of driver-only operation.

"That disgraceful and cavalier approach to jobs and safety on Scotland's railways now leaves us with no choice but to put on additional strike dates.

"The workforce knows only too well that there is a very real threat to passengers of watering down and wiping out the safety critical role of the guard on these Scotrail services. ‎That is a lethal gamble with basic rail safety.

"The union remains available for serious and meaningful talks."

A ScotRail spokeswoman added: "We have noted the RMT announcement received at the weekend.

"We would stress that we have just successfully moved large volumes of customers to two of Scotland's largest events at T in the Park and The Open Golf Championship. Our staff have gone great lengths to keep trains running."
