Chris Froome was forced to run some of the way up Mount Ventoux in Stage 12 of the Tour de France.

The farcical scenes unfolded as the Brit crashed with Richie Porte and Bauke Mollema after Richie Porte collided with a motorbike, which had apparently stopped due to crowding on the road.

It almost cost the yellow jersey leader his place, but a review gave him a better time and extended his lead over Adam Yates in second place.

He initially carried the damaged bike with him, as rules state that the bike and the rider must be together when crossing the finish line.

He later abandoned it and continued running while he waited for a replacement.

The initial replacement bike was too small for him, so he had to have a third bike taken to him.

Froome eventually crossed the finish line, looking dejected, one minute and 40 seconds behind Bauke Mollema, and 44 seconds behind Richie Porte.

All three cyclists involved in the collision were given the same time to allow for the unexpected incident which unfairly disadvantaged them.

As a result, Froome is now 47 seconds ahead of Adam Yates.

After the race, Richie Porte blamed the crowd for causing the accident, saying: "The crowd were all over the road and it was such a mess.

"I don't know what they're going to do but they're going to have to do something about it."
