The search for a missing 71-year-old man has entered a second day.

Police and lifeboat crews are looking for Val Smernicki, who has been reported missing from Tayport.

He was last seen at about 7.45pm on Sunday and concern is growing as he has not been in contact with his family.

A two-hour search involving the coastguard and volunteer lifeboats on the River Tay failed to locate him on Sunday night, and the search began again on Monday.

It is thought Mr Smernicki may have been in the area of West Lights, Tayport.

He is described as 5ft 11in, of slim build with short grey hair and is clean-shaven. He wears glasses and when last seen was wearing a black hooded top, dark coloured trousers and black trainers.

Sergeant Neil Johnston, of St Andrews police station, said: "We are growing increasingly concerned for Val's welfare since he is not in the best of health.

"Anyone with information is asked to please get in touch with us.

"Similarly if Val himself sees this appeal, we would ask him to contact us or his family to let us know he is safe and well."

Anyone with information is asked to contact officers on 101.
