A search operation was launched for an elderly man who went missing in Fife on Sunday evening.

A two-hour search involving the coastguard and volunteer lifeboats on the River Tay failed to locate the man.

It is thought the missing man may have been in the area of West Lights, Tayport, and crews were also looking in the waters off Tentsmuir Forest but found no one.

The search was sparked by an emergency call shortly before 9pm but after hours of searching the decision was made to stand down the rescue teams.

It is understood the elderly man is still missing.

A spokesman for the Broughty Ferry RNLI lifeboats said three lifeboats were launched to help look for the man.

He said: "With the assistance of a volunteer shore crew, the Broughty Ferry RNLI inshore lifeboat was launched at 9pm, followed by the all weather lifeboat Elizabeth of Glamis.

"The additional XP lifeboat was also utilised to maximise the effectiveness of the search.

"Following a thorough search lasting well over two hours of the calm but poorly lit waters off Tayport and Tentsmuir Forest no one was found.

"The decision was made by the Coastguard to stand down the volunteer lifeboat crews and return the lifeboats to station."

A second emergency call to the Tay Road Bridge, also at around 9pm, ended without incident.
