A man lost his arm after a lorry driver smashed into a low bridge then into his oncoming car.

Neil Black suffered life-changing injuries after William Brierley ignored warning signs at Inverkeillor railway bridge.

Brierley, 54, of Charleston Road, Dundee, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving on the A92 at Inverkeillor on March 30 last year.

Forfar Sheriff Court heard Brierley was driving a Mercedes lorry towing a 4.39m tall trailer between Arbroath and Montrose.

He struck the railway bridge, which is only 4.26m tall, before the head-on crash with Mr Black's Volkswagen Golf.

The court heard he ignored warning signs on the roadside, the bridge and a flashing warning light that activated when he drove past it.

Mr Black, 31, was taken to hospital in a "critical condition" before undergoing operations that resulted in him losing his right arm.

Mr Black said he was "getting on fine" a year on from the accident and was now using a prosthetic limb.

Defence solicitor Gary McIlravey said he would reserve his plea in mitigation to a later sentencing date.

He added: "He has allowed his HGV licence to lapse."

Sheriff Gregor Murray deferred sentence until next month for background reports and banned Brierley from the road in the mean time.
