There could be play on Wimbledon's middle Sunday for the first time since 2004 after a week of rain delays.

Friday has seen a continued backlog of second-round matches on the outside courts after heavy rainfall on Tuesday and Wednesday caused schedulers a major headache.

Wimbledon organisers are reluctant to introduce an additional unscheduled day's play despite the popularity of 'People's Sunday', when tickets for all courts are made available to the public.

Asked about the prospect of play on the traditional rest day, a Wimbledon spokesman said: "I'm sure it is being discussed. It is an evolving situation."
