A roller coaster that left ten people injured after plunging 30ft to the ground had a safety inspection just weeks before the crash.

It has now been revealed the Tsunami at M&D's received its annual independent safety inspection earlier this month and was closed the day before the crash due to a minor electrical fault.

Of the ten people hurt when the carriage came off the rails at the theme park in Motherwell, North Lanarkshire, on Sunday, eight remain in hospital.

They were taken to nearby hospitals including the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow, where four children are being treated.

M&D's was forced to close and emergency services launched a major operation amid scenes of carnage when the ride derailed.

Five gondolas came off the rails as they were rounding a bend and fell around 30ft, police said.

Witnesses said people were left trapped upside down following the incident at around 3.40pm.

Douglas Taylor, director of M&D's, said: "Each and every ride within the theme park is safety checked on a daily basis and undergoes a thorough independent inspection every 12 months.

"Tsunami had its annual independent safety inspection in early June.

"My brother Matthew and I have been in business together for 50 years and this is the first incident of this type that we have ever been involved with.

"We are devastated both as a family and a business and our heart goes out to everyone who has been affected by the accident."

Two of the youngsters, a boy aged 12 and one aged 11, are in a serious condition with injuries to their chest, abdomen, arms and hands.

A second 11-year-old boy is in a stable condition currently receiving treatment for leg and head injuries at the Royal Hospital for Children.

Another boy of the same age is being treated at Wishaw General Hospital, where a 14-year-old girl is being treated for serious chest injuries and a 16-year-old boy is being treated for an injury to his arm.

A 13-year-old boy is being checked at the Royal Hospital for Children and is stable.

Two other crash victims, a 19-year-old man and woman, were also taken to hospital. The man suffered a knee injury and is stable while the woman was released after being treated for a wrist injury.

Another woman, aged 25, who was passing by the scene, was also taken to hospital for assessment but was not injured.

M&D's has been closed while an investigation is carried out by Police Scotland and the Health and Safety Executive.
