A mother whose young daughter died after "shooting herself in the face" has been charged with murder.

Shakeya Holmes, 25, was charged with third-degree murder after her four-year-old child died on Thursday.

An arrest warrant for Holmes's boyfriend in connection with the death is also outstanding.

On Friday, police said it appeared the girl had shot herself in the face with the weapon.

The girl was discovered by officers with a gunshot wound to her eye at the North Philadelphia home she lived in with her mother and younger sister.

The girl was pronounced shortly after 1pm, while Holmes was arrested the next day.
