An Orange Order march is to take place through the streets of Falkirk town centre on Saturday.

The parade by the Grand Orange Lodge of Scotland will take place between 12pm and 4pm and will affect much of the town.

Falkirk Council is working with Police Scotland to try and minimise the disruption, which will include a number of road closures, traffic restrictions, reduced bus services and the closure of Callendar House.

A council spokesman said: "We are working closely with Police Scotland and other partners to reduce disruption, traffic congestion and ensure public safety on the day.

"Visitors to the town centre should plan travel well ahead on the day. Shoppers and visitors are reminded that the town centre is open for business as usual.

"The Falkirk BID has put measures in place to ensure public safety within the town centre.

"A SafeBase will be in operation and members of the British Red Cross will patrol the town centre from 2pm until midnight, assisting vulnerable people.

"Taxi marshals will be in service from 7pm to ensure people get home quickly and safely after the event."

In addition to the main parade, which travels a circular route around Falkirk town centre starting and ending in Callendar Park, there are other parades throughout the Falkirk Council area taking place both before and after the main parade.

In a statement on the Grand Orange Lodge of Scotland's website it said: "The parades are not a form of triumphalism but are instead a form of celebration.

"We believe in the universal right of freedom of expression. Whilst not everyone believes in the same things as us, we hope that they accept our right to hold our views.

"We in turn respect the right of all others to hold their own views and to celebrate their beliefs as we do.

"So when we march, we are upholding the rights of all faith groups to maintain their freedom of expression."
