Police are investigating suspicious ballot papers at an EU referendum count in Scotland.

Officers were called to the Grangemouth Sporting Complex on Thursday night as the public voted on whether or not to remain in the European Union.

They arrived at the count at around 11pm after being called in by the deputy returning officer. The papers in question were removed in evidence bags.

Police confirmed they received two reports of possible personation and are working with Falkirk Council to investigate the matter.

A spokesman for Police Scotland said: "Police Scotland received two separate reports of possible personation from the deputy returning officer for the Falkirk area on Thursday night.

"Officers are currently working with Falkirk Council to establish if a criminal offence has been committed."
