Members of the public have been warned "not to approach" a prisoner who has absconded.

Thomas Proctor failed to return to HMP Castle Huntly near Dundee following a period of home leave.

Police Scotland launched an appeal to trace him on Thursday.

The 33-year-old was reported missing at 3pm on Wednesday following a period of release from the open prison.

It is understood he may have travelled to the Airdrie area, the police said.

He is described as being 6ft with short dark hair.

Police Scotland said in a statement that if members of the public see Proctor they "should not approach him" and call the force.

Anyone with information can contact the police on 101.
