A young man battered a 73-year-old pensioner during an unprovoked street attack.

Members of the public were forced to intervene to help the elderly man in Dumfries on Monday evening when the attacker fled the scene.

He was with a large group of young people on Lochfield Road when he launched the assault at around 5.30pm.

The attacker is described as being 5ft 7in, of slim build, short brown hair wearing a black jumper and grey tracksuit bottoms or jeans, and was part of a larger group of young people in the area.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "About 5.30pm on Monday 20 June 2016 a 73-year-old man became the victim of an unprovoked assault in Lochfield Road, Dumfries.

"The assailant only ran off when a number of passers-by stopped to render assistance to the victim.

"If you witnessed or have any information who is responsible for this shameful crime, then please contact Police Scotland on 101."
