The US Senate has blocked a number of proposals which would have tightened gun controls in America post the Orlando shooting.

One of the bills would have banned gun sales to suspected terrorists.

Orlando gunman Omar Mateen had been the focus of two terror investigations that were later dropped.

He later described himself as an Islamic soldier in an emergency call made during the shootings.

The vote came just over a week after a gun massacre in Orlando, Florida, left 49 people dead.

The measures, pushed forward by the Democrats, fell 13 votes short of the 60 required.

Other legislation put forward included tighter background checks on all gun sales including those at gun shows and on the internet.
