At least one person has died and six are seriously injured after a section of a bridge under construction in southern Germany collapsed, German police said.

Twenty workers were at the site at the time when a 40-metre section of the bridge collapsed, said police spokeswoman Kathrin Thamm.

Several workers were also slightly injured, she said.

It was not immediately clear what led to the collapse near Werneck in northern Bavaria.
