A mother who crashed into a tree, killing her two-year-old daughter, had taken cocaine hours before getting behind the wheel.

Danielle Parsons, 23, was jailed for five years after pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving before her sentencing at Birmingham Crown Court.

Her two-year-old daughter, Esmee O'Reilly, was on the back seat of the car and died in hospital after the crash in Birmingham last year.

A family friend was also seriously injured, but has since recovered.

Police described the investigation as "complex" and said she made the "grave mistake" of taking drugs before driving.

Danielle Parsons will also serve two years in jail after admitting causing serious injury by dangerous driving, which will run concurrently.

She will be banned from driving for five-and-a-half years.
