Andy Murray earns £16m but drops ten places in rich list
Tennis star raked in £5.5m in prize money and a further £10.2m in sponsorship deals.
Scots tennis star Andy Murray has dropped ten places in the Forbes Richest Athletes list despite earning almost £16m last year.
The former Wimbledon champion was ranked at 64 on the prestigious list last year but has dropped ten spots to 74 as the 2016 figures were revealed by Forbes on Wednesday.
Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic were ranked way ahead of their Dunblane-born tennis rival - ranked at fourth position and sixth respectively.
Fourth-placed Federer raked in £4.6m in prize money and £41m from endorsements while Djokovic made £15m in winnings and a further £23.3m from endorsements.
Murray's total was slightly less but he still raked in an eye-watering £5.5m in prize money and a further £10.2m in sponsorship deals.
Last year, Murray made it to fourth spot on the Sunday Times Sport Rich List for British sportsmen and women with an estimated total fortune of £48m.
The world No 2 helped guide Great Britain to their first Davis Cup victory for 79 years.
He also has Wimbledon and US Open titles as well as an Olympic gold medal in his trophy cabinet.
Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo took top spot with a total of £60m, of which £21.9m came from partners including Nike, Tag Heuer and Herbalife.
Lionel Messi came in at second with a fortune of £56m earned over the year.
The Forbes list comprises of the 100 highest earning sports stars from around the world. They hail from 23 countries and compete in ten sports.
