A £7.6m regeneration project to breathe fresh life into a town once voted Scotland's most dismal has struggled to attract interest.

Denny in Stirlingshire won the Carbuncle Award in 2010 after asking for it when John o' Groats refused to take the title.

Falkirk Council has been told there is "no confirmed interest" in the second phase of the town's multimillion-pound makeover.

Construction is well under way on the shops, library, community room, town square and car park that make up phase one of the project, which is on schedule to be finished by next summer.

Marketing for the adjoining phase two of the project, a 4550sq m site for future retail development along Stirling Street, has failed to find interest.

An update presented to councillors at a meeting on Tuesday said: "The marketing process has highlighted a lack of interest in the Denny town centre phase two site at this time.

"Work is well under way on the first phase of the new town centre, with the contractor Clark Contracts proceeding with the programme.

"It is expected that the units will be available to occupiers to start fitting out by September this year, with the first tenants opening in November."

Councillors agreed to delay re-marketing the phase two site until after the completion of phase one, when it is hoped it will be a "more attractive and active environment" for prospective buyers.

The first phase is being funded through Falkirk Council funds and a Scottish Government regeneration fund award of £1.4m announced in November 2014.
