TV licensing, best known to many Scots as the sender of threatening and aggressive letters, turned 70 years old on Wednesday.
Here are some things you may not know about the public TV fee.
The licence was created in 1946 when normal television broadcast returned after the Second World War.
It was decided that a fee would be charged to finance the service, which then consisted of a single monochrome BBC channel.
The licence cost began at £2, and was issued by the Post Office. It also covered radio reception, which was then regulated separately with a purely radio licence available until 1971.
The colour licence was brought in in 1968 at a higher rate and grew as more users moved away from black and white viewing.
Licensing chiefs put together a list of some of the weirdest reasons people have claimed for not having paid the fee.
The top ten was released in February with the public voting for their favourites.
The licensing body has also made a number of memorable adverts through the years, featuring some of the biggest stars from the small screen.

The licence fee has come under threat in the era of multi-channel television, with calls for it to be scrapped as public service broadcasting loses its dominant position in viewing habits.
Ofcom research shows people in Scotland still spend an average four hours watching TV each day, with over half of all viewing to the main five public service broadcast channels.
The current government BBC charter review protected the fee until 2028, but ministers have doubted the future of the licence.
Alternative models have been proposed for funding, including additional subscription fees for international viewers and separate online costs.
