Arbroath's record 36-0 win under threat from Ecuadorian team
Third division side Pelileo have apparently racked up a 44-1 victory over Indi Native.
Arbroath Football Club's record 36-0 victory over Bon Accord in 1885 is under threat from a team in Ecuador.
Reports have emerged of third division team side Pelileo Sporting Club's 44-1 winning over rivals Indi Native in South America.
The Angus club's record has been matched, with FC Infonet Tallinn thrashing Virtsu Jalgpalliklubi 36-0 in the Estonian Cup last year, but has yet to be beaten.
Ronny Medina scored 18 goals in the 44-1 win in Ecuador, three times as many as the next best player Carlos Manzano.
A spokeswoman for Guinness World Records said no application has been made by Pelileo and Arbroath's scoreline record stands for now.
She said: "Arbroath still hold the record for the most goals by a team in one match.
"The highest score recorded in a first-class football match is 36.
"This first occurred in the Scottish Cup match between Arbroath and Bon Accord when Arbroath won 36-0 on their home ground in Arbroath, Scotland, UK on 12 September 1885.
"The feat was later equalled in an Estonian Cup match between Infonet FC and Virtsu Jalgpalliklubi, with Infonet FC winning 36-0 at the Lasnamäe KJH Stadium in Tallinn, Estonia, on 13 June 2015."
