A convicted sex offender who spent three years on the run after raping a 12-year-old girl has been detained in Brazil.

Antonio Pedro De Olivera Alves, 44, originally from Portugal, was sentenced to 11 years in prison in his absence at Stafford Crown Court in June 2013.

Alves, formerly of Aneurin Bevan Place in Rugeley, was found guilty of raping a 12-year-old girl in January 2012 after he pretended to be a teenage boy.

On his conviction, a European Arrest Warrant was issued and he was detained earlier this month after a joint operation between Staffordshire Police, the National Crime Agency and Brazilian authorities.

He will be remanded into custody in Brazil while the country's Supreme Court rules on his extradition to the UK, Staffordshire Police said.
