First UK fracking site approved in North Yorkshire
Councillors have approved an application by UK firm Third Energy to frack for shale gas.
Councillors have approved an application by UK firm Third Energy to frack for shale gas near the village of Kirby Misperton, North Yorkshire.
It will be the first UK fracking site since a ban was lifted in 2012.
Seven of the 11 North Yorkshire county council planning committee members voted in favour of the application.
The result was met with boos and jeers from protesters who had gathered on the lawn outside County Hall, in Northallerton, during the two-day meeting.
Demonstrators shouted "shame on you" and "you will be held accountable".
Third Energy will now be able to proceed with fracking for shale gas at an existing site between Malton and Pickering.
Committee chairman Peter Sowray said on Friday this was "by far the most controversial application we have ever had to deal with."
