Masked men tried to break into a pawn shop during a busy afternoon in Dundee city centre.

Harvey and Thompson Pawnbrokers on the Seagate was targeted by the would-be thieves on Friday at about 3pm.

Police are now hunting the men, who used dark masks to conceal the bottom of their faces and made off towards the Wellgate Shopping Centre.

Officers are particularly keen to speak to an elderly woman who was outside the shop at the time of the incident.

After the attempted break-in, the men are believed to have headed west along the Seagate and then north up St Andrews Street towards the Wellgate.

Both men are described as being 6ft and one was wearing a grey top with the hood up, grey tracksuit bottoms and a dark mask concealing the bottom half of his face.

The other was wearing a black hooded top and a dark mask also concealing the bottom half of his face.

Detective Constable Graeme Wishart said: "The area was busy with pedestrians and vehicles and it is possible that someone may have seen something useful to the enquiry.

"In particular it has been reported that there was an elderly lady standing outside the shop at the time of the incident.

"I would ask for this lady to come forward or anyone who has information that could assist."

Anyone with information is being asked to contact 101, or speak to any police officer. Information can also be passed anonymously via the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
