Authorities in India have issued a severe heatwave alert for the next two days following record-breaking temperatures.

The alert has been issued for the western states of Gujarat, Rajasthan and parts of the central state of Madhya Predesh.

New Delhi has reached 47C, while Phalodi in the western part of India saw the thermometer reach a record-breaking 51C on Thursday.

Temperatures across India are usually hot at this time of year before the monsoon rains and cooler temperatures arrive.

Hundreds of people have already died across 13 states, with damaged crops impacting hundreds of millions of Indians.

In some areas, the government has sent in water by train for emergency relief.
