Witnesses said they heard a "loud boom" followed by their homes shaking as the meteor fell to Earth.
A huge fireball has been captured on a police dashcam in the US.
The meteor lit up the sky over Maine but hundreds of other sightings were also reported from Canada to New Jersey.
In the clip below, traffic cop Sergeant Tim Farris is heard saying: "Oh my God!" as it flashed before his eyes.
The American Meteor Society shared the footage on its website causing so much traffic it reportedly crashed.
