Old Trafford bomb scare entirely my fault, says security boss
Chris Reid 'absolutely devastated' after Manchester United home game had to be abandoned.
A security boss has said he was "entirely" responsible for a fake bomb being left behind at Old Trafford on Sunday, causing 76,000 fans to be evacuated from the stadium.
Manchester United's last Premier League match of the season was abandoned after the fake incendiary device, one of 14 used the previous week during security training, was discovered in a toilet.
Security Search Management and Solutions managing director Chris Reid said he mistook an unused aid in his bag for the eight-inch "pipe bomb" after the exercise finished on Wednesday.
He said: "Unfortunately, an item that was placed in the male WC was not recovered as I had a similar item in my bag that I had not used.
"I saw this and made the mistake of thinking that the item in the WC had been brought back when found by the attendees, as had other items that I had checked back in to the bag".
He added: "This mistake is entirely mine. I have to take full responsibility for leaving the training item behind on Wednesday".
Mr Reid described himself as "absolutely devastated" that a lapse in protocol led to people being "disappointed, inconvenienced and frightened".
